£1.2m Cadet Centre Opens in Caldicot

A brand-new £1.2 million Joint Cadet Centre (JCC) has officially opened in Caldicot, marking a major boost for local cadets. The cutting-edge facility is part of a nationwide drive to modernise reserve and cadet centres across the UK, aimed at giving young recruits the best possible training environment.

State-of-the-Art Facility Replaces Old Cadet Shack

The new building, constructed on Mill Lane where the old Army Cadet Force base once stood, serves both Army and Air Cadets. This sleek, single-storey modular centre boasts larger classrooms, a spacious store room, offices, air conditioning, and an outdoor parade ground with wildlife boxes – a far cry from the “shack” the cadets used to call home.

During construction, the Caldicot Army Cadet Force temporarily moved to Jubilee Way, hosted by the local 2012 Air Cadet Squadron.

Leaders and Cadets Praise the New Centre

Phil Young, Head of Estates at the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (RFCA) Wales, said: “This £1.2 million investment is about having the right buildings in the right places to inspire future cadets. We’re confident this modern centre will attract young people from the area to join and thrive.”

SSgt Instructor Kerris Drew, Caldicot Army Cadet Force: “It’s an amazing upgrade – much bigger with better facilities. More classrooms mean more focused training. Plus, air conditioning and a new parade area make all the difference.”

Cadet Company Sergeant Major Deiniol Hughes, a six-year cadet, said: “We’re proud to meet in this professional new building near the school. It’s a huge step up from the old ‘shack’ and will definitely draw more young people and parents to the cadets. Sharing the centre with the Air Cadets opens up new training opportunities too.”

Rothery Harries, Civilian Instructor with 2012 Squadron: “The new centre is spacious with a modern servery and improved heating and ventilation. Our parade hall is bigger, which is fantastic.”

Looking Ahead: A Hub for Future Cadets

Completed in July, the JCC is already transforming the cadet experience. Delivered by RFCA Wales in partnership with Avison Young and BECT Building Contractors Ltd, the facility is set to serve the Caldicot community for years to come.

The new centre offers local youngsters a safe, welcoming space to develop skills and confidence. It’s a smart investment in the future of the UK’s cadet forces, promising to grow numbers and build stronger, better-trained reserve personnel.
