Retired Brit, 68, Takes on 1,000-Mile Walk to Raise Barrett’s Oesophagus Awareness

Stephen Fox, 68, is on a mission. Diagnosed last year with Barrett’s Oesophagus—a little-known but potentially pre-cancerous condition affecting up to one million Brits—Stephen decided to take bold action.

Setting off on May 6th, he’s hiking the entire Land’s End to John O’Groats route, carrying all his camping gear on his back. His goal? To shine a spotlight on Barrett’s Oesophagus and raise vital funds for charity.

Why Stephen Walks: Raising Awareness and Cash

“People barely know about Barrett’s,” Stephen explains. “I wanted to change that—and raise money for Barrett’s Wessex.” The charity focuses on early detection and treatment to stop Barrett’s from turning into deadly oesophageal cancer.

Charity Warns: Oesophageal Cancer Diagnosis Often Comes Too Late

Chris Robinson, co-founder and chairman of Barrett’s Wessex, stressed the urgency: “Many cancer charities exist, but oesophageal cancer is often diagnosed far too late, with patients given just weeks. Barrett’s Wessex fights to raise awareness and promote monitoring that can catch Barrett’s Oesophagus early.”

“We’re thrilled Stephen has chosen our cause—bonne marche!” Robinson added.
