Mystery of Cowes Teen Who Vanished Without Trace 27 Years Ago
Last Seen in Wet, Wintry Night
Damien, just 16, headed out to meet friends in Cowes, Isle of Wight, on a cold, rainy night on November 2, 1996. He was last caught on CCTV leaving a chip shop on Cowes’ High Street at 11.40pm.
He strolled past a bus stop to the local Co-op, where several people claim to have spoken with him. CCTV shows him walking back along High Street, near the pontoon entrance, before disappearing off camera just after midnight near an Indian restaurant opposite Sun Hill.
Vanished Without a Trace
Damien was reported missing the next afternoon. His family described his disappearance as totally out of character. They launched their own desperate search immediately.
Since then, police and private detectives have probed the case. TV documentaries and family campaigns have kept his story in the spotlight, but no new leads have cracked the cold case.
Family Slams Police Failures
Damien’s mother, Mrs. Nettles, has fiercely criticised Hampshire Constabulary’s bungled initial response. She points to ignored pleas for land and air searches, lost CCTV footage, and the police wrongly recording Damien as an adult, not a child.
Key Suspect and Ongoing Mystery
BBC Three’s 2016 eight-part documentary Unsolved – The Boy Who Disappeared exposed suspects linked to the case. Investigators found a key suspect had copies of witness statements and was intimidating potential witnesses.
