Knife-wielding thug jailed after vicious Widnes attack

Connor Wright, 25, from Avondale Drive, was slammed with a 12-month jail term at Liverpool Crown Court on Tuesday 25 August. He was convicted of assault causing actual bodily harm and possessing a knife in public. The court also hit him with a £156 victim surcharge.

Violent showdown near railway station

The drama unfolded after a 22-year-old man tried to visit Wright’s girlfriend’s home in Widnes but was refused entry. Wright, on the phone with his partner, confronted the man as he walked towards Hough Green Railway Station around 12.30pm on Sunday 12 July.

Fearing Wright had a weapon, the victim pulled him off his bicycle. During the scuffle near the station entrance, Wright lunged with a kitchen knife he was carrying. The victim suffered two minor cuts to his torso but avoided hospital treatment.

Thug flees and then fibs to cops

Wright fled along Liverpool Road, ditching the knife, coat, snood, house keys, and phone. He called police from a nearby shop, falsely claiming the victim was armed. But cops found the knife at Wright’s home, part of a kitchen set.

Arrested outside the shop, Wright said he was meeting a friend at the station and claimed the victim attacked him, with the knife “coming out of nowhere.” He initially denied knowing about the victim’s visit to his girlfriend’s house but later admitted he was told about it by phone.

Cops hail conviction, vow to fight knife crime

“Connor Wright went to Hough Green Railway Station armed with a large knife to confront his girlfriend’s ex-partner,” said Detective Constable Rob Catterall of Widnes Local Policing Unit. “Thankfully, the victim only had minor injuries. This could have been far worse.”

Chief Inspector Sarah Heath, Cheshire’s knife crime lead, added: “Cheshire has a lower rate of knife crime than most counties. But we won’t rest until our streets are weapons-free. We’re working with local groups to steer youngsters away from knives and crime.”

Police and Crime Commissioner David Keane urged the public to come forward. “Carrying a knife doesn’t make you safer – it devastates lives. If you have info on knife carriers, report it. It could save lives.”

Wright’s conviction sends a clear warning: knife crime won’t be tolerated. Police pledge tough action – but they need the community’s help to clean up the streets.
