Fire Ravages Brighton’s Royal Albion Hotel
The iconic Royal Albion Hotel on Brighton Seafront has been badly damaged by a recent blaze. Firefighters have brought the flames under control, but the fallout is far from over. Brighton and Hove Council has swung into urgent action to keep the area safe for locals and visitors.
Road Closures and Safety First
The key A259 road next to the hotel will stay shut for at least 72 hours. Council bosses warn this could go on longer as experts work hard to clear the site safely without risking anyone’s wellbeing. Part of the historic building is structurally unsound and set for demolition—a process expected to take two to three weeks—and will allow fire teams better access to the site.
Help for Displaced Residents
Those forced from their homes by the fire can get help from the council’s housing team. Support is just an email or phone call away:
- Email: [email protected]
- Phone: 01273 294 400 (Option 1)
Properties behind the hotel remain off-limits due to falling debris risks during demolition, with the council offering continued advice and support for affected residents.
Safety Checks and Hazard Clearance
UKPower Networks and Southern Gas Networks crews are on site isolating all power and gas connections. Asbestos was found in the hotel’s ceiling coatings, but officials say there’s little risk of exposure post-fire. Still, the area is cordoned off, with contractors constantly monitoring for hazards.
Council Leader Bella Sankey said: “We’re incredibly grateful to our emergency services and partners for their swift response. The damage to this cherished landmark is severe, and road closures will remain as long as safety demands. Thank you to residents and visitors for your patience during this difficult time.”
