An investigation is underway following a non-fatal police shooting in south-west London after armed response vehicles stopped a car linked to an alleged murder in Southampton over the weekend. As previously reported, Hampshire Police were called to Langhorn Road at 12.21pm on Sunday (24 July) after reports of a serious assault on a local 19-year-old man.
He was taken to the hospital with a puncture wound to the chest and pronounced dead. Police identified a car that they believe was involved in the incident and followed it into the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) area.
At around 9 p.m. on Sunday, it was stopped by armed response vehicles at the intersection of King’s Road and Beaufort Street in SW3. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) determined that during the incident in Chelsea, a single shot was fired from a police firearm, injuring one of the men in the car’s hand.
His injury is not considered life-threatening, and he remains in the hospital. The other three men in the car were apprehended on the spot.
The IOPC will now conduct an investigation, reviewing police radio communication, body worn video footage, and the initial accounts provided by the officers involved, who are all being treated as witnesses. “The discharge of firearms by police officers is relatively rare,” said Regional Director Graham Beesley, “but where potentially lethal force has been used, it is critical that we conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances.”
