War Hero Landlord Chases Charity Thief in Bury Pub Caper
Pub Boss Tackles Thief Who Snatched Charity Box
Stewart Spensley, landlord of The Two Tubs in Bury, didn’t hesitate when a thief made off with the pub’s charity donation box. The 42-year-old ex-serviceman gave chase, corners the crook, and held him until police arrived.
“I was not going to let it go. I ran out the building, saw him and chased him down,” said Spensley.
“When I got to him he dropped the box and started making threats, so I restrained him until the police arrived.”
Fighting for Fusilier Rigby’s Legacy
Spensley, a veteran who served three tours in Afghanistan, regularly raises funds for the Lee Rigby Foundation. The charity supports military families and was set up by the family of Fusilier Lee Rigby, who was murdered in a terror attack outside Woolwich Barracks in 2013.
Spensley served alongside Rigby in Cyprus and remembers him as a morale booster:
“As soon as he walked in a room you knew he was going to say something or do something that would just have everyone laughing.”
Bury’s Military Pub with a Heart
The Two Tubs, located in Bury town centre, is a hub for the military community. Aside from the donation box, they donate jukebox proceeds to the foundation and offer free weekly meals to service personnel.
