West Sussex Heroes Honoured in King’s Birthday List
Three West Sussex County Council and Fire Service stars have scored big in the King’s Birthday Honours. Chief Fire Officer Sabrina Cohen-Hatton, School Crossing Patrol Officer Mary Nye, and Assistant Director Emily King grabbed top awards for their outstanding service.
Fire Chief Sabrina Cohen-Hatton Bags King’s Fire Service Medal
Sabrina Cohen-Hatton, head of West Sussex Fire & Rescue, has been handed the King’s Fire Service Medal for exceptional bravery and service. The chief said, “I am extremely proud to serve within the fire and rescue sector, and being awarded for a job that I have genuinely loved doing for the last 23 years is a huge honour and a really special moment.”
Starting out as an 18-year-old firefighter in South Wales in 2001, Sabrina’s impressive rise took her through major roles, including Deputy Assistant Commissioner at London Fire Brigade and interim Deputy Chief Fire Officer for Surrey. She’s led through high-profile crises like the Westminster Bridge and Finsbury Park terror attacks, plus the Grenfell aftermath. Sabrina now chairs the National Fire Chief’s Council Improvement and leads the Working Dogs programme.
West Sussex Council’s Cllr Duncan Crow praised her, saying, “This award is hard earned, thoroughly deserved and a testament to the dedicated work Sabrina has carried out over two decades.”
School Crossing Star Mary Nye Wins British Empire Medal
Mary Nye, 90, has wowed with 51 years as a School Crossing Patrol Officer. Awarded the British Empire Medal, Mary continues to keep kids safe outside West Sussex schools. She shared, “I love being there for the children and the community.”
Line manager Sonia Barber nominated Mary, applauding her unshakable dedication to child safety. Cllr Joy Dennis chipped in, “Our School Crossing Patrols perform a vital role in our communities, and my thanks go to them all.”
Holbrook Primary School’s Head Teacher Ian Holmes added, “Generations of children, parents, and staff are thankful for Mary’s amazing service.”
Assistant Director Emily King Snags MBE
Emily King, West Sussex County Council’s Assistant Director (Communities), earned an MBE for two decades of community support. Emily said, “I am incredibly proud to have been mentioned in the honours list.”
