Appeal for Information on Anniversary of Fatal Bethnal Green Shooting as £20k Reward Offered

Detectives are making a renewed appeal for information a year after the fatal shooting of 31-year-old Joshua McLean in Weavers Fields, Bethnal Green, on 6 August 2024.

The Metropolitan Police have released fresh CCTV footage showing Joshua walking with friends along Bethnal Green Road around an hour before he was found with a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, Joshua was sadly pronounced dead at the scene at 8.27pm

A £20,000 reward is being offered by the independent charity Crimestoppers for information that leads to the identification, arrest, and conviction of those responsible.

Fresh Plea for Witnesses

Details

Detective Inspector Jonny Newell, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, urged those who were in or near the ‘jungle’ area of Weavers Fields or around Bethnal Green Tube station on the evening of the shooting to come forward.

Although a year has passed since the senseless murder of Joshua McLean, the impact of that day is still fresh for his heartbroken family. We believe there are people in the community who know who is responsible but, for whatever reason, have not yet come forward. Now is the time to speak up,” said DI Newell.

Detectives will be distributing leaflets in the local area in the coming days in a bid to reach anyone with crucial information.

Crimestoppers: “Speak Up Anonymously”

Alexa Loukas, London Regional Manager for Crimestoppers, reinforced the importance of anonymity for potential witnesses.

“We know fear of reprisals may have prevented people from coming forward. Crimestoppers offers a safe and anonymous way to provide information. We never ask for names and cannot trace calls or IP addresses,” she said.

“This was a shocking act of violence carried out in broad daylight in a busy public park. Joshua’s family are devastated and deserve answers. Your information could be the key to securing justice.”
