Mini Digger Chaos Sparks Fire on Passenger Train Near Craven Arms

Just after 10.30pm, emergency crews rushed to a passenger train ablaze near Craven Arms station. Around 60 passengers were safely evacuated, with the fire quickly brought under control.

One Injured as Train Hits Stolen Mini Digger on Tracks

The drama unfolded when a Transport for Wales train, travelling at about 60mph, struck a mini digger abandoned on the tracks. The collision caused a fuel leak that ignited the fire. Fortunately, only one passenger suffered a minor ankle injury, not severe enough for hospital treatment.

Second Mini Digger Found; Theft Suspected

Police later discovered a second mini digger dumped on a nearby embankment. Investigators believe both machines were stolen from a rental yard and discarded recklessly. Detectives from the British Transport Police’s Major, Serious, and Organised Crime Unit are leading the probe.

Detective Chief Inspector Sam Blackburn said: “While we are at an early stage, we are confident this fire stemmed from the attempted theft of two mini diggers that ended up on the tracks. Any obstruction on the railway is extremely dangerous, risking serious injury or worse. We are taking this very seriously and working hard to hold those responsible to account.”

“The collision caused a fuel leak that ignited the fire. We’re working closely with the fire service to contain the fuel and minimise environmental impact.”
