Firefighters were called to Sydenham Road in Sydenham following reports of a suspected carbon monoxide leak. The incident occurred at approximately 4:15 pm on Monday, July 3.
Upon arrival, four individuals from a neighboring flat had already evacuated the building. Later, a man went to the hospital seeking medical attention. A woman and child were also taken to the hospital due to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.
The London Fire Brigade promptly utilised specialist GDU equipment to conduct a systematic sweep of the building, ensuring that elevated readings of chemical substances were identified and addressed. Fire crews diligently worked to eliminate any potential risks before leaving the scene.
The incident was concluded by approximately 7:00 pm, with firefighters ensuring the safety of the affected premises.
A spokesperson from the London Fire Brigade emphasised the importance of carbon monoxide awareness and prevention. Carbon monoxide is a silent and odorless gas that can be fatal within minutes. Installing carbon monoxide alarms in rooms with fuel-burning appliances and ensuring audibility throughout the property is crucial. Additionally, it is essential to be familiar with the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning and know the necessary steps to take if someone is suspected to be affected.

Alongside the individuals who sought medical attention, four others from a neighboring flat had evacuated the premises. Firefighters from Forest Hill, Beckenham, Lewisham, and Bethnal Green fire stations responded to the incident, utilizing specialized equipment to ensure the safety of all occupants.
