Yellow Warning: Thunderstorms Set to Batter Southern England and Wales

The Met Office has slammed down a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms over much of southern England and southern Wales. The alert is in force until 11.59pm on Monday, October 7, 2024.

Prepare for heavy rain, hail, and gusty winds that could disrupt lives and travel.

The regions in the firing line include East Sussex, West Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Dorset, Devon, Bristol, Somerset, and key Welsh spots like Cardiff and Swansea.

Network Rail is urging travellers to check updates before heading out.

Met Office Meteorologist Sounds the Alarm

“Heavy showers and thunderstorms will sweep north across southern England and Wales later today before clearing overnight,” said Frank Saunders, chief meteorologist. “Thunderstorms will hit south-facing coasts hardest, bringing hail and strong gusts.”

The Met Office warns of tricky driving with standing water and hail creating hazards. Expect journey delays for drivers, bus riders, and train passengers alike.

Flooding Risk and Torrential Downpours Loom

Some areas could get hammered with 20-30mm of rain in just a few hours, with isolated spots seeing up to 40mm. Sussex and west Surrey face the biggest flood risk.

BBC South East weather presenter Nina Ridge said, “Rain should clear by midnight but people living in flood-prone zones must stay alert.”

Residents in vulnerable areas should visit the Environment Agency’s website for the latest flood warnings and take precautions. The Met Office warns more unstable weather will hit central and southern UK on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, ex-Hurricane Kirk looms over northern France, bringing the threat of heavy rain and winds later this week. Thankfully, the UK looks set to dodge the worst of it.
