Teen Animal Hero Scoops Young Inspiration Award!

Sixteen-year-old Olivia is more than your average teen. When she’s not hitting the books, she’s at Stonebridge City Farm in St Anns, Nottingham, caring for animals and helping families facing tough times or disabilities enjoy a day out. Now, her selfless efforts have landed her the prestigious Young Inspiration Award from Nottinghamshire Police’s Live Our Best Life Awards.

Volunteering Star Goes Above and Beyond

Olivia’s community spirit has earned her multiple nominations for her kindness, resilience, and dedication. Known for putting others first, she even refused birthday presents one year, asking instead for donations to buy a warm coat for a shivering horse. To raise the cash, she set up a bustling mini business selling cakes and ice hockey jerseys.

“I started volunteering at Stonebridge in 2021 during lockdown for my Duke of Edinburgh Award, and I just fell in love with it here,” Olivia said. “I help look after the animals, feed them, muck out the stables, and carry out health checks on the smaller critters. I enjoy making sure visitors, especially kids and people with disabilities, get to meet and stroke the animals. It feels amazing to know I’m helping.”

Fundraising for a Cause Close to Her Heart

Besides hands-on care, Olivia raises crucial funds to keep the farm running. “Stonebridge struggles in winter, so I sell ice hockey jerseys and bake cakes to help us get through the cold months,” she explained. She’s also organised visits from the Nottingham Panthers ice hockey team, boosting the farm’s profile and attracting new supporters.

Community Cheers on Olivia’s Achievements

Stonebridge’s Weekend Operation Manager, Josh Herring, heaped praise on Olivia’s contribution: “She’s a cornerstone of our volunteer team — reliable, caring, and always ready to step up. Her fundraising paid for a pony’s winter coat and brought much-needed attention to our charity farm. We couldn’t be prouder to see her recognised.”

Nottinghamshire Police youth outreach worker Romel Davis said: “Olivia’s selflessness is a beacon for all. Giving up free time to help animals and people alike shows true character. We need more young people like Olivia making a difference.”

With dreams of studying zoology and working in a zoo, Olivia’s farm volunteering is clearly shaping a bright future.
