Whale in Distress Off Whitstable Sparks Rescue Mission
The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) sprang into action after a whale was spotted struggling just 100 metres off the coast of Whitstable, North Kent.
Whale Moves Towards Isle of Sheppey
By 12:45pm, local volunteers arrived at the scene, but the whale had already drifted towards the Isle of Sheppey and The Swale, a tidal channel in the Thames Estuary. Initial reports suggested the whale was a minke or possibly a humpback.
Surprise Sperm Whale Sighting
Photos from a Whitstable local revealed the whale was most likely a sperm whale — a deep-water species rarely seen in UK waters. This unexpected find has raised concern among marine experts.
Volunteers Track Whale’s Struggle in Shallow Waters
- At 1:30pm, the Inshore Fisheries patrol boat spotted the whale swimming with the tide into The Swale.
- BDMLR volunteers followed on foot and by 3pm found the whale in shallow water, where its movements appeared slow and struggle was evident.
- With the tide now receding, hopes of the whale making it back to deep waters are fading.
BDMLR medics are closely monitoring the whale’s behaviour and condition as the rescue operation continues. More updates to follow.
