Mirror Sparks Fire Panic in Rochester Home
A Rochester couple is warning others after a reflective vanity mirror caused a fire in their home. Sam and Michael’s bedroom curtains ignited when sunlight bounced off the mirror, sparking flames in their St Margaret’s Banks house.
Smoke Alarm Saves the Day
Michael recalls the terrifying moment: “I was working downstairs and smelled burning, like toast. I checked around, then heard the smoke alarm upstairs. I ran up shouting for Sam. We got out fast and dialled 999.”
Fire crews arrived swiftly. Two engines tackled the blaze using hose reel jets to douse flames on the third floor. Thankfully, their cat Tigger was rescued unharmed.
Fire Damage Limited by Closed Door
The fire destroyed much in the bedroom, but damage was mostly contained thanks to the door being shut. This prevented the flames spreading further in the house.
Couple and Fire Service Issue Crucial Warning
Sam said, “We’d just redecorated, so it was a shock to learn a mirror started the fire. It’s not something you think about. Now we tell everyone to keep mirrors and shiny stuff away from windows and direct sun.”
Michael added, “Just be careful and educate your family. One small thing like this can ruin everything. We were lucky.”
Kent Fire and Rescue Service backs the warning, urging residents to keep reflective objects out of sunlight to avoid similar disasters.
Top Tips to Stop Fires from Reflections
