Government Boosts £200 Energy Bill Support for Alternative Fuel Users
The government has expanded its £200 energy bills support scheme to help more households using alternative heating fuels like heating oil, LPG, and biomass. Thanks to this update, those who stockpiled fuel before last winter can now claim the payment more easily.
Deadline Extended for Alternative Fuel Receipts
Energy Security Secretary Grant Shapps has extended the proof-of-purchase period by three months. Households can now submit fuel purchase receipts dating back to June 2022—previously, only purchases from September 2022 counted. This ensures folks who bulk-bought fuel ahead of soaring winter prices aren’t left out.
The new application window stays open until May 2023. Most alternative fuel users have already received automatic payments. But if you haven’t, now’s the time to apply. Earlier, Shapps also increased the number of receipts you can submit—from two up to ten—to help households secure the full £200.
Official Backing: Grant Shapps and Amanda Solloway Speak Out
Grant Shapps: “We’ve already covered half of a typical household’s energy bill, but our priority remains getting support to those who need it most. That’s why we’re allowing receipts back to June 2022, recognising many bought fuel ahead of winter.”
Amanda Solloway, Minister for Energy Consumers and Affordability: “We stand with families hit hard by Putin’s illegal war on Ukraine. Extending this support for heating oil, LPG, and biomass users ensures no one is left stranded. Most have received payments automatically. If you haven’t applied yet, do so now and claim your £200.”
More Ways to Claim Energy Help
This £200 boost is part of several ongoing schemes aimed at easing energy costs:
