The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a probe after a 43-year-old man lost consciousness in police custody in Leeds and later died in hospital.

  • The man arrived at Elland Road Custody Suite on Monday, September 23, at 5:30 pm.
  • He was checked by a medical practitioner on arrival and had no reported health issues.
  • On Tuesday, September 24, around 1 pm, custody staff found him unresponsive in his cell.
  • Officers performed CPR and called an ambulance immediately.
  • He was rushed to hospital, where he passed away the following day, September 25.

IOPC Steps In for Independent, Impartial Investigation

IOPC Regional Director Emily Barry offered condolences:

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends, and all those affected by his death. We have been in contact with the family to explain our role and advise them of the next steps.”

Barry emphasised the importance of transparency:

“When someone has died after being taken into police custody, it is vital all circumstances are independently and impartially examined.”
