Beware! Islanders Duped by Dodgy Blue Badge Websites
Disabled residents on the Isle of Wight are being warned to steer clear of rip-off websites charging up to £49 to help with blue badge applications. Trading standards chiefs say scams are on the rise, with locals misled into paying for a service that’s actually free.
Don’t Pay a Penny – Use Official Gov.uk Site
The Isle of Wight Council insists blue badges should only be applied for or renewed via the official government website: gov.uk/apply-blue-badge. It costs nothing to apply here and ensures your application is safe and secure.
“I would remind people that they do not have to visit sites such as bluebadgeonline.org as badge renewals or applications can be made for free through the government’s blue badge Gov.uk page. You should never use any other website as you risk paying money and not receiving this service,” said Councillor Tig Outlaw, Cabinet member for community safety and public protection.
How to Protect Yourself From Blue Badge Scams
- Always use the official government website to apply or renew
- Ignore third-party sites charging hefty fees
- Prepare documents proving your identity and Isle of Wight residency
- If in doubt, contact the council on 01983 823340 for advice
