Chaos on M23: A lorry crash has shut the entire southbound M23 in West Sussex this morning, sparking massive delays between Junction 10 (Crawley) and Junction 11 (Pease Pottage).

Early Morning Smash Sparks Diesel Disaster

The drama unfolded just after 4am when a lorry careered across the central reservation, smashing its fuel tank and spilling gallons of diesel all over the carriageway. The shunt also trashed the central barrier, forcing emergency crews from Sussex Police, West Sussex Fire & Rescue, South East Coast Ambulance, and National Highways into action.

Road Closure and Recovery Efforts

The lorry was finally recovered by 7:25am, but the southbound lanes remain shut. Emergency teams are now checking the road surface for damage caused by the diesel spill – resurfacing may be needed. To add to the mayhem, Lane 3 on the northbound side is also closed due to barrier damage, causing even more traffic grief in the area.

How to Dodge the Jam – Diversion Routes

Drivers are urged to follow the hollow diamond diversion signs:

  • Exit at Junction 10 (Crawley)
  • Take the A2011 westbound towards Tushmore Gyratory
  • Join A23 southbound
  • Re-enter M23 at Junction 11 (Pease Pottage)

National Highways warns motorists to expect long delays, plan alternative routes, and allow extra travel time this morning.
