A fierce fire has erupted at the John Gunner & Co Waste Management and Recycling Centre on Aldershot Road, Guildford. Fire crews remain at the scene battling the flames.

Firefighters Fight to Contain the Inferno

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service have deployed four fire engines and two water carriers to tackle the blaze. They warn the incident will continue for several more hours.

“We kindly ask nearby residents to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed. We will continue to update you,” a spokesperson said.

Lithium-Ion Battery Sparks Massive Waste Fire

The cause has been confirmed as a lithium-ion battery igniting about 30 by 30 metres of waste. Fire chiefs urge the public:

  • Dispose of batteries properly to prevent dangerous fires.
  • Use designated battery drop-off points at recycling centres.

Residents near the site are advised to steer clear and keep their homes sealed until the fire is fully under control.
