A Romanian man from Harehills, Leeds, has been locked up for nearly seven years after a deadly high-speed crash on the A58 in Scarcroft.
Deadly Ride at Double the Speed Limit
Nicolae Subtirel, 27, was driving four friends to work in a Vauxhall Zafira on 17 October 2022 when he blasted through a 30mph zone at 60-70mph. The terrifying speed proved fatal when another vehicle pulled out, causing a collision that killed 35-year-old passenger Petru Surban — who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt — and seriously injured another man.
Hard-Working Dad Faces Justice
Subtirel, a father of two with a previously clean record, pleaded guilty to causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving. The court handed down an 81-month prison sentence and slapped on a nine-and-a-half-year driving ban.
“This crash was a tragedy caused primarily by excessive speed,” the judge said.
