Massive Landslide Triggers Emergency Evacuations on Isle of Wight

A huge landslide struck Bonchurch near Shanklin and Ventnor late Sunday, sparking urgent evacuations and shutting a vital road on the Isle of Wight. The ground gave way around 9:30pm, causing major damage and putting homes at serious risk.

Homes at Risk as Road Shut and Residents Flee

The landslide hit close to Leeson Road, near Devil’s Chimney and The Landslip. One property’s garden was completely wiped out, with around 40 metres of earth lost. Police launched a door-to-door evacuation, sending a National Police Air Service helicopter from Bournemouth to survey the scene from above.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary closed Leeson Road both ways, cutting off the busy route between Shanklin and Ventnor. Southern Vectis buses on Route 3 have suspended stops between Daish Hotel and Chimney Steps until further notice.

Evacuations Ongoing as Landslip Remains Active

More than 20 homes are now evacuated. Inspector Mark Radford revealed the landslip is still moving, making the situation unpredictable and potentially worse overnight. Properties between Bonchurch Shute and Smugglers Haven, plus some below Bonchurch Shute, are being cleared.

“We’re evacuating all unsafe properties on the sea side of the road and advising residents to stay clear,” said Inspector Radford.

An elderly woman and her dog, forced out of their home, expressed shock and fear over what comes next.

Temporary Shelter Set Up at Daish’s Hotel

The Isle of Wight Council’s Emergency Planning and homelessness teams are on hand, with a temporary shelter opened at Daish’s Hotel in Shanklin. Staff are hustling to provide safe accommodation and support for displaced residents.

Officials warn the full impact won’t be clear until daylight, with updates expected throughout Monday.
