Major Gas Leak Forces Overnight Evacuation of 100 on New Cross Road
Gas Leak Sparks Chaos in South-East London
Emergency crews are still on the scene after a suspected gas leak led to the overnight evacuation of around 100 residents and businesses on New Cross Road. The road is shut both ways between Florence Road and Deptford Bridge following the late-night incident on July 9.
New Cross Road Closed, Travel Disrupted
As of 7:30am on July 10, New Cross Road remains closed, causing headaches for commuters:
- Eastbound traffic allowed only from Deptford High Street
- Westbound access past Deptford Bridge completely blocked
Transport for London and local officials urge drivers and travellers to steer clear of the area as delays are expected to continue through the morning rush.
London Fire Brigade Issues Warning
The London Fire Brigade said:
“Firefighters are responding to a suspected gas leak on New Cross Road. Around 100 people have been evacuated from the immediate area as a precaution and road closures are in place. Disruption is expected to last through the night. Please avoid the area as crews respond.”
Locals Describe “Calm but Tense” Evacuation
Witnesses reported smelling gas Wednesday evening before emergency teams arrived. One local described the scene as “calm but tense” with crews swiftly securing the area and escorting residents to safety. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far.
