Fresh Welfare Reforms to Push More Brits into Work
The Department for Work and Pensions is rolling out new welfare reforms focused on job and health support. The ambitious £2.5 billion Back to Work Plan targets over a million people with disabilities, health conditions, or long-term unemployment. A new Chance to Work Guarantee aims to smash barriers to employment for millions more.
Mel Stride, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, said: “We’re dedicated to easing cost of living pressures and helping thousands leave benefits for lasting employment.”
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt added: “These payments are crucial for vulnerable families battling inflation. Our Back to Work Plan will fuel job creation and economic growth.”
Automatic Payments & Pensioner Alert
The £299 payment will be paid automatically by the DWP and HM Revenue & Customs – no paperwork needed. The DWP also urges low-income pensioners not on Pension Credit to check if they’re eligible for the February payment.
From April 2024, the Local Housing Allowance hike will take effect, pumping £7 billion over five years into helping 1.6 million renters. That’s a tidy £800 extra per year for many households.
