Cross-Channel Chaos Warning: No Turn-Up-And-Go Tickets This Weekend
Kent Resilience Forum (KRF) has issued a stark warning: expect busy border crossings and no last-minute tickets this bank holiday weekend. Eurotunnel and Dover ferry operators confirm heavy bookings from Friday to Sunday, 27-29 May, with turn-up-and-go tickets already sold out. If you haven’t booked, don’t turn up expecting a quick ride.
Jubilee Break Fuels Surge in Travel
With the Queen’s 70 years of public service celebrated soon, bookings remain sky-high for Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 June. The four-day holiday is causing a spike in cross-Channel journeys as holidaymakers and football fans alike hit the roads.
Liverpool FC supporters heading to the UEFA Champions League final in Paris this Saturday have already secured their ferry and Eurotunnel tickets, thanks to early coordination with KRF and travel operators. But others may face disappointment.
Kent’s Congestion Woes Get Worse
Kent – famous for its beaches, countryside, and culture – is bracing for a traffic nightmare. Local roads are clogged with tourism, freight, and local trips. Reduced P&O ferry capacity continues to cause headaches, keeping Operation Brock active on the M20 to manage freight to Europe since April.
Traffic controls at Brenley Corner near Faversham redirect EU-bound lorries back to the M20, helping protect Dover town from gridlock.
Get Ready: Top Tips from Kent Resilience Forum
- National Highways has eased restrictions on the A2070 in Ashford until 6 June to ease local and tourist traffic flow.
- Drivers are urged to check routes before travel, allow extra time, and pack essentials — food, water, and meds — in case of delays.
Kent Resilience Forum Tactical Lead Toby Howe said: “This weekend and the Jubilee Bank Holiday eve will be very busy on Kent’s cross-Channel routes. Stay updated with travel news via @HighwaysSEAST and @KentHighways. Allow extra time and carry something to eat and drink for delays.
“KRF partners will be monitoring the situation closely, working with Port of Dover, Eurotunnel, and National Highways to keep traffic moving.”
National Highways plans to lift M20 freight controls after the Jubilee weekend on the night of 5 June, allowing permanent barrier relocation work to resume.
