Man Collapses and Dies by The Silkstream in NW9

Just after 1.40am on Wednesday, 20 December, police were alerted to a suspicious car on The Hyde, NW9. A man suddenly bolted from the vehicle and plunged into nearby waters known as The Silkstream.

Desperate Rescue Attempt Ends in Tragedy

The man struggled to reach the far bank before collapsing in a fenced-off area. Officers carefully avoided entering the water but raced around the banks to reach him. Despite their best efforts, the barriers prevented access.

London Fire Brigade arrived swiftly, deploying specialist gear to reach the collapsed man and administering first aid. Paramedics then rushed him to hospital, where he was pronounced critically ill.

Man Dies, Loved Ones Left Heartbroken

The man, believed to be in his late 40s, sadly passed away in the early hours of 20 December. His next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.

Investigation Underway, Police Offer Reassurance

As standard in deaths following police contact, the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct have been notified.

Commander Owain Richards said: “This is a very sad incident and my thoughts and condolences go out to the man’s family and all those affected. It is only right that all circumstances are fully investigated. The Met will cooperate fully with any inquiry. Meanwhile, we will be working closely with partners and the community to provide reassurance and share information where we can.”

Officers involved are being supported after the traumatic event as the investigation continues.
