Firefighters Show Off Life-Saving Skills at Whitley Wood Family Fun Day
A buzzing family fun day at Whitley Wood Fire Station in Reading stole the spotlight this Saturday (25th June) as the UKRO Regional Challenge hit town. Hosted by Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, the event saw teams from all over the UK showcase top-notch rescue skills – from trauma treatment to complex vehicle extrications.
Teams Brave Storm Fears to Battle It Out
Despite grim weather predictions of rain and flash floods, the skies held steady as crews from Hereford and worcester/" title="Worcester" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Worcester, London, South Wales, Cornwall, and neighbouring Hampshire joined forces. Visitors got an up-close look at cutting-edge rescue operations, including the Fire Alpha II Rescue Boat ready for River Thames emergencies and the Heavy Rescue Unit designed for major vehicle crashes. The Aerial Ladder Platform was also deployed, demonstrating firefighting from heights, perfect for tackling fires in multi-storey flats.
Action, Treats, and Safety Tips Galore
Between thrilling rescue demonstrations, families cooled off with ice creams, and plenty indulged at the sizzling barbecue. Firefighters took time out to teach lifesaving CPR and share vital home fire prevention and water safety tips, making it both an entertaining and educational day out.
South Wales Claims Top Spot in Intense Rescue Challenge
The highlight? Live simulated road traffic collision drills that had the crowds hooked. Teams raced the clock to extract ‘victims’ using specialist gear under intense scrutiny from expert assessors. South Wales Fire and Rescue stormed to victory, with Hereford & Worcester finishing a close second and Hampshire claiming third place.
Area Manager Paul Maynard said, “This open day was a fantastic family event and a superb chance for the public to see what we do beyond fighting fires. We tackle all kinds of emergencies, and it’s brilliant to share safety messages with the community. The kids loved it and we’re delighted with the turnout and success.”
