Brighton i360 Tower Plunges Into Administration – Council Faces £32M Hit

Iconic Brighton i360 Faces Grim Future

The Brighton i360 observation tower is heading into administration, Brighton & Hove City Council confirmed today. The move follows a Notice of Intention from Brighton i360 Limited. Interpath administrators have been appointed to keep the attraction running temporarily while hunting for a buyer to save the seaside landmark.

Council Stung by £32 Million Financial Blow

The city council, which pumped millions into the project back in 2014, is the top creditor. The total outstanding debt hits a staggering £51 million, including a £4 million loan from Coast to Capital. But the council’s real loss is around £32 million when factoring in loans and government interest.

Deputy Leader and Finance Chief Councillor Jacob Taylor said, “It is extremely disappointing that the Brighton i360 is filing for administration. This leaves a large unpaid amount to the city council, which will impact the overall budget. I think it is important that the council and the city reflect on the decisions that have led us to this point – and learn lessons for the future.”

Cost Crunch and Poor Weather Blamed for Collapse

Julia Barfield, chairwoman of Brighton i360 Ltd, pinned the downfall on soaring costs, dismal summer weather, and the biting cost-of-living crisis which hammered visitor numbers. She vowed to keep the attraction open during administration.

“We continue to work closely with the council and the prospective administrators at Interpath to ensure the continued operation of the business during this period and to explore all potential avenues for restructuring.”

A Rocky Ride Since Day One

Since opening in August 2016, the i360 promised to transform Brighton’s seafront but has faced nonstop financial turbulence. The council backed it with a Public Works Loan Board loan hoping to spark regeneration, but the attraction’s money troubles worsened, triggering loan restructures in 2022 and 2023. Repayments halted entirely in June 2023, deepening the cash crisis.

What Lies Ahead for Brighton’s Seafront Star?

The future hangs in the balance as administrators assess whether the tower can stay open and find an investor willing to rescue the iconic yet struggling attraction. For now, visitors can still enjoy the views, but long-term survival hinges on quick action.

This collapse throws a spotlight on the risks of public funding for mega-projects and calls for sharper judgement in regeneration schemes ahead.
