NEU Teachers Set to Strike Across England and Wales
Teachers from the National Education Union (NEU) have voted overwhelmingly to strike. The action will hit schools in England and Wales with a national walkout planned for 1 February, 15 March, and 16 March, alongside multiple regional strike dates.
Strike Dates and Regions Breakdown
- 1 February: All eligible members in England and Wales
- 14 February: Wales only
- 28 February: Northern, North West, Yorkshire & The Humber
- 1 March: East Midlands, West Midlands, Eastern regions
- 2 March: London, South East, South West
- 15 March: All eligible members in England and Wales
- 16 March: All eligible members in England and Wales
NEU Demands Fully Funded, Above-Inflation Pay Rise
The NEU revealed a crushing 90.44% of teachers backed strike action on a 53.27% turnout. The union blasted the Government for “watching the destruction of education” and said “We have to save our schools.”
“This was a really hard decision for our members. They don’t want to strike; they want to teach and support children. But it’s a last resort,” said the NEU.
“The first strike on 1 February will affect 23,400 schools across England and Wales. Sixth form college teachers will also strike, fighting a linked dispute.”
Government Response and Next Steps
Education Secretary Gillian Keegan plans to meet NEU leaders this week in efforts to resolve the impasse.
“This dispute can be resolved without strikes. We’re ready to negotiate anytime, anywhere, but this can’t go on,” the NEU stressed.
The strike action threatens to disrupt hundreds of thousands of pupils, shaking up classrooms across the country in early 2023.
