Deadly Migrant Boat Sinkings off Tunisia Claim 27 Lives
Two Tragic Shipwrecks in Just Two Days
Two migrant boats sank off Tunisia’s east coast last weekend, leaving 27 people dead or missing. The first vessel, carrying 37 souls bound for Italy, capsized on Friday. Only 17 were saved; 20 remain unaccounted for.
The second boat went down on Saturday. Four bodies washed ashore, 36 passengers were rescued, and three are still missing.
Rusty Iron Boats Put Lives at Risk
Both boats were crudely constructed from iron sheets – cheaper than traditional wooden boats but far from seaworthy. These unsafe vessels offer little protection against the perilous Mediterranean crossing.
Migrant Death Toll Rises Amid Tunisia Crisis
This disaster is just the latest pain in a growing tragedy. Since March, at least seven shipwrecks off Tunisia have claimed around 100 lives or left people missing.
Tunisia has now overtaken Libya as the main launchpad for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty in Africa and the Middle East. In the first quarter of 2023 alone, Tunisian coastguards arrested more than 14,000 migrants – a fivefold increase from last year.
Smugglers Must Face Justice
Most migrants are from sub-Saharan Africa and pay huge sums to ruthless people smugglers who organise these deadly voyages. Tunisian authorities have vowed to investigate both sinkings and hunt down the criminal networks behind these tragic crossings.
