Hold on tight! After a chilly spell, the UK faces a battering from heavy rain and gale-force winds this Sunday and Monday. The Met Office warns gusts could roar up to 70mph in exposed spots across the country.

Storm Alert: Dangerous Winds and Torrential Rain Incoming

Drivers and riders, brace yourselves. The UK’s largest independent road safety charity, IAM RoadSmart, has handed out crucial advice to tackle these wild weather conditions safely.

Life-Saving Tips for Motorists in Stormy Weather

  • Think twice before setting off. If conditions look deadly, don’t risk it. Watch out for exposed locations like bridges and gaps between buildings, where wind blasts hit hardest.
  • Keep an eye on roadside trees. Their movement offers a clue about wind strength and potential hazards.
  • Beware of hidden dangers. Heavy rain can damage road surfaces and hide deep potholes under puddles. Stay alert and avoid surprises on the road.
  • Overtaking caution. Large vehicles can worsen wind gusts, so be extra careful when passing.

Expert Advice: Stay Safe Behind the Wheel and on Two Wheels

“Strong winds create hazardous driving conditions so drivers should keep a firm grip on the steering wheel in case of crosswinds in exposed areas which may push them off-course. Alongside this, drivers should reduce their speed because of the impact strong winds have on a vehicle’s handling. It’s also vital to give other road users – particularly cyclists and motorcyclists – a wide berth when overtaking,” said Nicholas Lyes, IAM RoadSmart’s Director of Policy and Standards.

“For riders, conditions can be even more challenging. We encourage them to slow down and keep control by using the throttle and counter-steering to balance out the effects of the wind. Loose clothing will also flap around far more in strong winds so it’s vital to ensure all articles of clothing are securely done up.”

Don’t let the storm catch you off guard. Stay sharp, slow down, and give yourself plenty of space on the road this weekend.
