Man Dies After Police Called Over Knife Incident in North London
The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) and North Area Command Unit are working closely with community partners after a man in his 30s tragically died following a police call to a London home.
Investigation Underway with IOPC Oversight
Detective Chief Inspector Aman Dhaliwal, leading the probe, said: “Our thoughts are with the friends and family who have lost him so suddenly and tragically.”
The Metropolitan Police promptly informed the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) when the man fell ill during the incident on 22 July. After reviewing all evidence, the IOPC handed the investigation back to the Met’s DPS to continue locally.
“This does not mean the case is any less serious,” DCI Dhaliwal stressed. “We will examine body-worn footage and witness accounts thoroughly. We ask the public to avoid speculation out of respect for the family and community.”
Distressing Incident at James Gardens
- A member of the public called police at 8:07pm on Thursday, 22 July, in concern for a man behaving erratically with a knife in James Gardens, N22.
- Officers found the man clearly distressed and applied handcuffs briefly to prevent harm to himself or others.
- He was rushed to a North London hospital by ambulance but sadly died two days later on 24 July at 6:56pm.
- A post-mortem exam is scheduled for 27 July.
Police Praise Officers’ Actions
Chief Superintendent Treena Fleming from Haringey and Enfield said: “This was a heartbreaking event, and our thoughts remain with the man’s loved ones. Our officers acted bravely to protect him and others at the scene.”
She added: “We urge everyone to refrain from speculation. A full review of body camera footage and witness interviews are part of normal procedure to ensure transparency. We will release further updates when possible.”
