UK Launches Mega Centre to Lead Global Alternative Protein Boom
The UK is charging ahead to dominate the fast-growing global alternative protein market with its brand-new National Alternative Protein Innovation Centre (NAPIC). This bold move aims to turbocharge innovation across the entire alternative protein supply chain and secure Britain’s spot as a world leader in this game-changing sector.
Why Alternative Proteins Matter
Alternative proteins are no flash in the pan—they come with serious perks over traditional animal-based foods, including:
- Slashing carbon footprints
- Cutting down resource use
- Boosting food system sustainability and resilience
Experts Back the UK’s Big Bet
Professor Anne Ferguson-Smith, Executive Chair of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, hailed the investment. “This positions the UK at the forefront of the global race to develop the next generation of alternative protein products, services, and technologies,” she said.
Dr Stella Peace, Executive Director for Healthy Living and Agriculture at Innovate UK, added NAPIC would “foster international collaboration to ensure a more sustainable and secure food future for all.”
Challenges and Big Future Payoffs
Professor Anwesha Sarkar, NAPIC’s Project Leader and Director of Research at the University of Leeds, admitted hurdles remain. Consumer acceptance, taste concerns, and impacts on traditional farming need tackling to unlock this sector’s full power.
Yet the rewards could be huge. A Green Alliance report estimates the UK’s alternative protein industry could be worth £6.8 billion a year by 2035, creating 25,000 jobs. NAPIC is key to making this happen.
World-Class Collaboration and Funding

Over 100 UK and international partners—including SMEs, global firms, academics, and charities—have already thrown in £23 million to back NAPIC.
Funding kicks off in August 2024, with a five-year mission to spark a wave of alternative protein breakthroughs. The centre aims to reel in more investment while developing innovative products that could shake up global nutrition and sustainability.
