Southern UK Braces for Funnel Clouds and Tiny Tornadoes! The Met Office has issued a stark warning as severe thunderstorms and lashing showers batter the south of England.

South East on Tornado Watch

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill revealed on Wednesday afternoon that the atmosphere is ripe for unusual weather. He said, “It’s not out of the question that we could see a funnel cloud, maybe even a brief tornado across parts of the South East.

While the south shivers under intense showers, thunder, lightning, and hail, the north basks under clear skies with sunny spells—highlighting a stark north-south weather divide across the UK.

“Northern parts are enjoying fine, settled weather, but in the South, wet weather has pushed in and will bring showery bursts throughout the day,” Burkill added.

UK’s Driest Spring in Nearly Six Decades

The sudden surge of storms follows one of the driest spring starts in almost 60 years. By Friday, rainfall across the UK measured just 80.6mm, missing the 1852 record low of 100.7mm by a wide margin.

The Environment Agency warns this could spell drought trouble this summer if rain fails to pick up in coming months.

Funnel Clouds vs Tornadoes: What’s the Difference?

A funnel cloud is a rotating column of air hanging from a cloud base that doesn’t reach the ground. When it touches earth, it officially becomes a tornado. The UK sees a handful of brief, weak tornadoes each year—nothing like the monster twisters of the US, but enough to cause a stir.

Environment Agency Sounds Water Alarm

Officials warn that the rollercoaster weather combo—periods of heavy rain followed by long dry spells—could soon stretch water supplies to breaking point. A spokesperson said:

“If current patterns continue, with bursts of heavy 1 followed by extended dry spells, we could face pressure on water supplies and elevated wildfire risks by late summer.”

What’s Next?

The Met Office forecasts thundery weather easing by Thursday. The north and Midlands should see more settled skies, but patchy storms and downpours could linger in the South East into the weekend. Keep your brollies handy!
