Shooting Incident Mars Morgan State University’s Homecoming Celebration

A shooting at Morgan State University’s homecoming celebration has left five individuals with non-threatening injuries, sparking a four-hour lockdown and raising concerns across the campus community. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, disrupting festivities and prompting the cancellation of classes on Wednesday.

Police Commissioner Richard Worley addressed reporters, revealing that the victims, aged between 18 and 22, include four males and one female, with all but one being affiliated with MSU. The shooting unfolded near the Murphy Fine Arts Center, shortly after the coronation of Mister and Miss Morgan State.

During the lockdown, police conducted room-to-room searches as students sought shelter. Worley emphasised an “abundance of caution” leading to the cancellation of Wednesday’s classes. The university alerted students to avoid specific areas on campus, including the arts center and Thurgood Marshall Hall.

Details regarding the number of shooters involved remain unclear, and no information about suspects or arrests has been released. The FBI also assisted local authorities, according to a post on social media.

The lockdown was lifted around 00.30 local time after SWAT officers cleared a building where a suspect may have been located. Evidence collection, marked by orange evidence markers, took place in the vicinity of the shooting. A helicopter circled the campus, and a police blockade was established at the south entrance.
