UK Appoints Top Judge to Help Nail Russia Over Ukraine War Crimes

The Attorney General, Suella Braverman QC MP, has named Sir Howard Morrison QC KCMG as an Independent Adviser to Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, Iryna Venediktova. His mission: to crack down on war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine.

Sir Howard Brings Heavyweight Legal Muscle

Sir Howard is no stranger to tough cases. With over 12 years as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the International Criminal Court, he’s prosecuted some of the most serious international crimes—including the infamous Radovan Karadzic trial.

His extensive legal expertise will now be put to immediate use in helping Ukraine gather evidence and build cases against those responsible for atrocities.

UK Stands Firm Behind Ukraine’s Fight for Justice

This move doubles down on the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s quest to hold Russia accountable. Earlier this month, the Attorney General signed a joint statement with Venediktova pledging full backing in hunting down war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The two officials stay in close contact and plan an in-person meeting soon to ramp up collaboration.

Leaders Pledge Relentless Pursuit of Justice

“It has been a privilege to work with Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, Iryna Venediktova. My admiration for her courage and determination grows with every meeting,” said Suella Braverman.

“The UK is committed to showing the world that the atrocities happening daily in Ukraine will not be forgotten. Those giving or following illegal orders will be tracked down and held to account.”

“I am pleased to offer Sir Howard’s expert help and will continue to do all I can as Attorney General to support Ukraine’s journey to justice against Russia.”

“We are honoured to have Sir Howard Morrison’s help. His experience and knowledge of international criminal law speaks louder than words. His assistance will be taken up immediately on multiple issues,” said Iryna Venediktova.
