Residents in several areas of Brixham, Devon, continue to face a boil notice as South West Water grapples with an ongoing cryptosporidium investigation. The affected neighbourhoods include Summercombe, Chestnut Drive, Higher Brixham, Southdown, Upton Manor, and St Mary’s supply area.

Boil Notice Remains in Place for Brixham, Devon Residents Amid Cryptosporidium Investigation

Background

The boil notice was initially issued after the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed cases of cryptosporidium contamination. While South West Water recently lifted the notice for Kingswear, Noss Marina, Hillhead Park, and Raddicombe supply zones, the situation remains critical in other parts of Brixham.

Current Situation

South West Water is diligently monitoring the situation and providing rolling updates. Bottled water collection points are available for the public at Broadsands, Freshwater Quarry, and Churston, operating from 07:00 and 21:00.

To ensure safety, South West Water crews are delivering bottled water directly to properties in the affected areas.

Advisory for Affected Residents

Residents impacted by the boil notice are strongly advised to continue boiling tap water before consumption. This precaution applies to drinking, cooking, food preparation, and teeth brushing. Boiled water can be safely stored in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Normal tap water can still be used for washing, bathing, and toilet flushing.

Official Statements

Drinking Water Inspectorate Spokesperson: The Drinking Water Inspectorate is aware of illness reports related to water supplies in Brixham. South West Water is collaborating with health authorities, and the Inspectorate is actively investigating the cause, extent, and necessary actions.

Environment Agency Spokesperson: The Environment Agency is closely engaged with the UK Health Security Agency and South West Water regarding reported cryptosporidium cases in Brixham. Residents are urged to follow all advice provided.

Dr Bayad Nozad, Consultant in Health Protection at UKHSA: We recommend that affected residents adhere to South West Water’s advice—boil drinking water and allow it to cool before use. Most cryptosporidium symptoms can be managed at home without medical intervention. However, if symptoms persist beyond 7 days or become severe, seek medical attention promptly.

Symptoms and Precautions

Cryptosporidiosis symptoms include watery diarrhoea, stomach pains, dehydration, weight loss, and fever. While most people recover fully within two weeks, those with weakened immune systems may experience longer-lasting effects. Young children aged 1 to 5 years are particularly susceptible.

To prevent further spread, individuals with symptoms should stay home from nursery, school, and work for 48 hours after the last episode of illness. Additionally, avoid swimming for 14 days if you’ve had diarrhoea. Proper hand hygiene when handling food and after using the toilet is crucial.

If severe symptoms like bloody diarrhoea occur, contact NHS 111 or your GP surgery promptly.
