This year’s Magical Taxi Tour, a heartwarming event where London’s black cab drivers take seriously ill children on a trip of a lifetime to Disneyland Paris, began its journey today from Canary Wharf. Around 100 black cabs departed with children suffering from chronic or life-limiting conditions, along with their carers and families, for an unforgettable weekend in France.
The convoy travels from London to Dover, where they board a ferry to Calais, before completing the final stretch to Disneyland Paris. The journey is accompanied by police outriders from the City of London Police and France’s Gendarme Nationale, ensuring the convoy’s safe passage.
For Detective Superintendent Matt Mountford of the City of London Police, this year’s event will be particularly poignant, as it marks his final Magical Taxi Tour after 25 years of dedicated service. Matt first became involved with the charity event, now in its 29th year, early in his career as a police motorcyclist.
Reflecting on his years with the tour, Matt said, “Every year creates special memories. Seeing the joy on the faces of these wonderful kids who have so much courage and determination is very humbling.”

Matt also highlighted the logistical challenges of escorting the convoy, which requires meticulous coordination and support from both sides of the Channel. Over the years, the convoy has faced everything from breakdowns to medical emergencies, but the dedication of the support team has always ensured the event’s success.
For his final tour, Matt will be joined by his two sons, Lucas and Leon, who are also police officers. “The day will be emotional, I’m sure,” he said. I will miss the camaraderie, the laughs, and most of all, the smiles and happiness it brings the kids and their families.”

Commander Umer Khan of the City of London Police expressed the force’s continued pride in supporting the event. We are pleased to be able to support the Magical Taxi Tour for another year on their journey from Canary Wharf to Calais. Our officers will be assisting the children, families, carers, and the cabbies to ensure they have a very special weekend.”
The Magical Taxi Tour remains a cherished annual event, providing unforgettable memories for children and their families while celebrating the kindness of London’s black cab drivers and the police officers who support the journey.
