A Maidstone man has been sentenced to 15 months in prison after being found guilty of non-fatal strangulation and common assault.

Ashley Southgate, 57, subjected his victim, a woman he knew, to repeated violence and emotional abuse, leading to her isolation from family and friends. The violent incidents occurred on February 17, 2024, at a residential property, where Southgate strangled the woman multiple times. Just two days later, he verbally abused her and assaulted her again.

The victim showed remarkable courage by contacting the police following the abuse, and Southgate was arrested on February 24, 2024, at his home address.

Southgate appeared at Maidstone Crown Court and was found guilty of intentional strangulation and common assault. He was sentenced on Wednesday, September 11, to 15 months’ imprisonment.

Detective Constable Jennifer Mitchell, who led the investigation, said: “Southgate subjected this woman to a terrifying and prolonged ordeal, where she was left isolated and in fear. Assaults of this nature not only result in injury but also cause psychological effects on the victims that can stay with them for the rest of their lives.”

She added, “Kent Police is committed to protecting women and girls, be that while they are out and about, or at home or work. Our officers will use every power available to them to pursue violent offenders such as Southgate and also safeguard victims from often repeated abuse.”

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, you can contact the police or reach out to support services for help. In an emergency, always dial 999.
