An international manhunt is underway for Pankaj Lamba, the husband of Harshita Brella, whose body was found in the boot of a car in Ilford, east London, on 14 November 2024. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has confirmed that Lamba was arrested in September following a domestic abuse report filed by Brella.
Timeline of Events
Police believe 24-year-old Brella was fatally strangled on 10 November in Corby, Northamptonshire. Her husband, Lamba, 23, has been named as the prime suspect in the investigation.
Detectives have released CCTV footage showing the couple walking together near Corby’s boating lake on the evening of her death. The image, captured on 10 November, shows the pair near Cottingham Road, where police are appealing for witnesses.
IOPC Investigation
The IOPC has launched an investigation into Northamptonshire Police following a self-referral by the force. The watchdog confirmed that Brella had reported domestic abuse in August, leading to Lamba’s arrest on 3 September. He was subsequently released on bail with conditions and served a domestic violence protection notice (DVPN).
IOPC regional director Derrick Campbell said:
“We will be examining the police response to Ms Brella’s report of domestic abuse made at the end of August this year. We will look into further contact Northamptonshire Police had with Ms Brella concerning the case.
The investigation will scrutinize the actions and decisions taken by the force, including whether more could have been done to prevent Brella’s death. Campbell also extended condolences to Brella’s family and assured them of transparency in the review.
Police Appeal
Detectives have urged anyone who was in the Cottingham Road area on 10 November to come forward with information. A CCTV image of the couple, taken shortly before her suspected murder, has been shared to assist the investigation.
International Search for Lamba
Lamba remains at large, with authorities treating his capture as a priority. Police believe he may have fled the UK, and an international manhunt is in progress. A photo of Lamba has been circulated widely, showing him with short black hair, a beard, and wearing a grey t-shirt.
Community Response
Brella’s death has shocked the community and sparked discussions on the effectiveness of protective measures like DVPNs. Advocacy groups have called for enhanced support for domestic abuse survivors and stricter enforcement of protective orders.
Further updates are expected as the investigation unfolds. Anyone with information about Lamba’s whereabouts is urged to contact the police immediately.
