Police officers on a routine drink-driving patrol uncovered a lorry loaded with £70,000 worth of whisky, believed to be stolen, after a dramatic chase on the M606 near Bradford.
The incident occurred on the morning of Saturday, December 14, 2024, when the vehicle failed to stop for officers conducting checks as part of the Operation Limit national drink and drug drive campaign.
Chase Ends with Police Stinger
The lorry initially evaded officers, leading them on a brief pursuit along the northbound M606. Police deployed a stinger at 7:50 AM to bring the vehicle to a halt, temporarily closing the motorway.

Once stopped, officers searched the vehicle and discovered boxes of Johnny Cree whisky, estimated to be worth £70,000. The cargo was unaccompanied by supporting documentation, leading officers to suspect it had been stolen.
Arrests Made
Two men found in the lorry were arrested at the scene and remain in police custody as investigations continue.
A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said:
“The drink-drive patrol officers weren’t expecting this alcohol-related offence. Their swift action ensured the lorry was safely stopped, and the whisky seized. The investigation into the origins of the goods is ongoing.
Road Reopened
The northbound M606 has since reopened after being closed while officers dealt with the incident.
Public Praise for Police
The quick response by officers has been praised for preventing further criminal activity and recovering the stolen goods. One commuter who witnessed the chase said:
“It was surprising to see such a dramatic stop during what seemed like a routine patrol. The police handled it brilliantly.”
Anyone with information about the whisky or the incident is urged to contact West Yorkshire Police or report anonymously via Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
