Longtime EastEnders fans were in for a festive surprise during the soap’s Christmas Eve episode as Nigel Bates made his return to Albert Square for the first time in nearly three decades.

Paul Bradley, the actor behind the beloved character, said he felt “honoured” to step back into the role after 26 years.

In tonight’s episode (December 24), Nigel appeared at the community centre, where Yolande Trueman (Angela Wynter) was volunteering. The BBC revealed that Nigel’s return will lead to a reunion with his childhood best friend, Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), in a special Christmas Day episode.

Nigel Bates: A Look Back

Nigel left Walford in April 1998 to start a new life in Scotland with his adopted daughter Clare (Gemma Bissix), his partner Julie Haye (Karen Henthorn), and her son Josh Saunders (Jon Lee).

During his original run, Nigel’s storylines included his tragic romance with Debbie Tyler (Nicola Duffett), who was killed in a hit-and-run, and his touching friendship with Dot Cotton (June Brown), who saw him as the son she never had.

At school, Nigel was best friends with Phil and Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp), a connection that will be explored further in his comeback storyline.

Paul Bradley on Returning

The 69-year-old actor expressed his excitement about reprising the role:

“I’m thrilled and honoured to be back as Nigel. Despite it being such a long time ago, I still get recognised as Nigel in the street. Returning has been great as I’m so familiar with many of the faces at EastEnders, and they are a very friendly bunch.

“It’s fantastic to work with Steve McFadden again – I’m a huge admirer of his work, and he sets the bar really high. I’m having a really good time.”

What’s Next for Nigel?

The soap’s executive producer, Chris Clenshaw, teased the intrigue surrounding Nigel’s return:

“There’s a lot of mystery about Nigel’s situation and why he’s here alone, which will be revealed in the coming weeks. Phil has never needed support more than he does this Christmas, so we’re excited to reunite these two old friends.”

Fans can expect emotional moments and revelations as Nigel and Phil’s relationship takes center stage during the festive period.
