Driver Jailed for 5 Years After Friend Dies in Shocking BMW Crash
Barry Smart, 37, from Basingstoke, has been locked up for five years after his reckless driving caused the death of his friend, Kirsty Saunders.
Deadly Crash on A30
Back on 24 June 2016, Smart was behind the wheel of a BMW traveling along the A30 at Water End. The car suddenly veered off the road and slammed into a tree.
Kirsty Saunders, 30, sitting in the passenger seat, suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Southampton General Hospital.
Kirsty Dies Days After Crash
Tragically, Kirsty passed away three days later on 27 June in hospital. Smart himself was also severely injured and taken to hospital in critical condition.
Investigation Led to Court Case
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit carried out a thorough probe. Their findings led to Smart pleading guilty to causing Kirsty’s death by dangerous driving at Winchester Crown Court.
