A chaotic scene unfolded in Gosport on Sunday as a Ford Focus careered straight through the front doors of Bridgemary Library. The 33-year-old driver has since been arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Car Crashes Through Library Front

The Ford Focus ploughed into the main entrance of Bridgemary Library, causing serious damage to the building. Witnesses reported seeing a man enter the library after the crash, but police confirmed nothing was stolen.

Library Shut Down, Safety Concerns Raised

Hampshire County Council announced the library will remain closed on Monday while repairs and safety checks are carried out. Councillor Sean Woodward assured the public the building will be secured and reopened as soon as possible.

“I would like to thank the public and libraries teams who rushed to the scene to ensure no one was hurt and to assist police,” said Councillor Woodward.

Gosport borough councillor Linda Batty, a former Bridgemary librarian, explained the urgency behind evacuating properties above the library.

“The properties above were evacuated due to concerns the structure could potentially be dangerous,” she said.

Suspect in Custody

Hampshire Constabulary confirmed the 33-year-old man, who has no fixed address, remains in police custody this morning. Investigations are ongoing as officers piece together what sparked the bizarre crash-and-enter incident.
