Ventnor Man Slugs Hotel Owner Over Alleyway Toilet Tussle
A Ventnor man walked into court this week after landing in hot water for punching a hotel owner — all because he was caught urinating in an alleyway.
Alleyway Incident Sparks Punch-Up
Patrick Rice, 31, of Pier Street, Ventnor, was found guilty of assault at Isle of Wight Crown Court. The trouble kicked off when Rice was caught peeing near St Augustine Villa. The 65-year-old hotel owner, Mr Williamson, came out after hearing noises and confronted Rice, sparking a scuffle.
Self-Defence Claim Falls Flat
Rice tried to claim self-defence during the trial, arguing nearby public toilets were closed and he had to go. But the court wasn’t buying it. Rice was already on a suspended sentence from an earlier affray offence.
Community Order and Fine for Rice
Recorder Marcus Pilgerstorfer handed down a 3-month curfew and a 12-month community order. Rice must also cough up a £400 fine plus £425 in costs within 28 days for breaching his suspended sentence.
The punishment sends a clear message: public disorder won’t be tolerated — even over a desperate dash to the loo.
