Neighbours Turn Deadly: Two Men Convicted of Stabbing and Beating Ian Tomlin to Death
Brutal Attack Over Neighbourly Feud
Two men have been unanimously convicted of murdering their neighbour in a savage attack. Gary Beech, 48, and Michael Swan, 45, were found guilty at the Old Bailey today for the fatal assault on 46-year-old Ian Tomlin.
The pair had a long-running feud with Ian, a fellow resident in their london/" title="London" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked" data-wpil-monitor-id="1052">London block, sparked by suspicions that Beech and Swan were dealing drugs on site. Ian often confronted them, sparking months of tension.
Baseball Bat and Knife Used in Fatal Confrontation
On 17 October 2018, Ian came face to face with Beech and Swan on the first-floor landing of their building. An argument turned violent fast.
Ian armed himself with a baseball bat and chain, but CCTV shows him struggling with Swan before Beech launched a vicious attack. Ian was beaten repeatedly with his own baseball bat and stabbed multiple times in the neck.
After the assault, the killers calmly walked away, with Swan carrying the weapon. Ian was found gravely injured by police, who rushed to the scene shortly after.
Justice Served for Ian Tomlin
A post-mortem confirmed blunt force trauma to the head and fatal stab wounds caused Ian’s death. Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command swiftly tracked down the suspects using CCTV evidence. Swan was arrested at home on 18 October; Beech followed the next day.
“These men acted together in a brutal assault leading to Ian’s tragic death. They overpowered Ian and began an excessively violent attack upon him, no doubt because he was again confronting them about their criminal activities,” said Detective Inspector Jo Sidaway.
“I hope this conviction brings some measure of comfort to Ian’s family. Today’s verdict shows we will not tolerate violence on London’s streets.”
Sentencing Looms
Beech and Swan remain in custody and face sentencing at the Old Bailey on Friday, 17 May. London can only hope the judge delivers a stiff sentence for this savage murder.
