An unnamed Dorset Police sergeant has been caught for gross misconduct after pursuing inappropriate relationships with officers under his command. The panel slammed his conduct as a serious breach of trust, revealing he committed three counts of misconduct between April 2021 and May 2022.

Sergeant Resigns After Admitting Misconduct

The sergeant, who skipped the disciplinary hearing at Dorset Police HQ in Winfrith, had already admitted the allegations and quit the force in August 2022. A legal chairman imposed an anonymity order to protect the officer’s welfare, meaning his identity won’t be revealed.

“These were individuals who were members of his team, he was in a position to influence their careers,” the chairman said. “Had the officer not resigned, we would have issued an immediate dismissal.”

Deputy Chief Constable Condemns Conduct

Deputy Chief Constable Sam de Reya, Dorset Police’s professional standards lead, blasted the sergeant’s actions as “unacceptable.” She emphasised the seriousness of abusing a position of authority.

“It is unacceptably inappropriate for a sergeant in a position of authority to engage in inappropriate relationships with colleagues under his supervision and care,” she said.

Clear Message to Police and Public

The misconduct panel found the sergeant’s behaviour unprofessional and a clear abuse of power. Deputy Chief Constable de Reya reassured that Dorset Police will crack down hard on any signs of wrongdoing.

“Our officers must uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity at all times. This outcome sends a clear message that robust investigations will be conducted, and this type of behaviour will not be tolerated,” she added.
