Surrey Firefighters Gear Up to Back Ambulance Crews in COVID-19 Fight

Surrey firefighters have stepped up to aid the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) in the ongoing battle against COVID-19. Five firefighters from Godstone, Guildford, Camberley, and Reigate have undergone special training to become Ambulance Assistants, ready to join paramedics on the frontline.

Rapid Training to Save Lives

These five operational firefighters completed SECAmb’s clinical care and advanced driving courses, equipping them to handle medical emergencies alongside paramedics. Their new roles could see them crewing ambulances and responding to urgent calls under the guidance of lead clinicians.

“I’m really proud of the adaptableness shown by these individuals. They’re taking on vitally important roles and changing the way they work to help meet these new priorities to ensure the people of Surrey are safe,” said Kasey Beal, Assistant Chief Fire Officer.

Stronger Together: Fire and Ambulance Teams Unite

SECAmb’s Executive Director of Operations, Joe Garcia, praised the collaboration. “The additional support provided by these individuals is really welcomed. I thank them for stepping into this role and providing us with greater resilience.”

This initiative forms part of a national three-way pact, thoroughly risk-assessed by the Fire Brigade Union and fire service to ensure safety and effectiveness.
