Ramsgate Tunnel to Stay Shut Indefinitely After Fiery Crash

Kent County Council has announced that Ramsgate Tunnel will remain closed to all traffic for the foreseeable future following a serious collision and fire on the evening of Friday, 27 June. The blaze caused extensive damage to the tunnel’s electrical systems, lighting, communications, and road surface, rendering it unsafe for reopening.

Major Damage Halts Tunnel Use

The vehicle crash triggered a fiery blaze that devastated vital infrastructure inside the tunnel. Contractors are currently assessing the full extent of the destruction before any repair work can begin. A council spokesperson said: “Safety is our top priority, and we will not reopen the tunnel until it is deemed fully safe.”

Public Urged to Stay Clear

The council has urged the public not to attempt to enter or visit Ramsgate Tunnel. Access remains strictly limited to authorised personnel due to ongoing safety risks.
