Love Scams Hit Kent Hard with £1.8 Million Lost
Romance fraud is ripping off Kent victims to the tune of £1.8 million between August 2019 and August 2020. Over 180 cases were reported to Action Fraud, with women making up just over half the victims.
But experts warn the real figure could be much higher. Many victims keep quiet, too embarrassed to admit they’ve been duped.
How the Scam Works: Fake Love, Real Loss
Scammers woo their targets online, gaining trust over weeks or even months. They pose as loving partners before asking for cash or personal details. It’s a cruel trap preying on genuine emotions.
Kent Police Warn: Spot the Signals Before It’s Too Late
Detective Sergeant Marc Cananur from Kent’s Serious Economic Crime Unit says: “This crime is devastating for people seeking love but instead get exploited. Fraudsters use every trick to steal money and info.”
He urges anyone suspicious or affected to report dating fraud immediately. “Your info helps us catch these heartless criminals and bring them to justice.”
Red Flags: Don’t Fall for These Classic Scammer Moves
- Insist on moving chats to instant messaging apps or texts, ditching dating sites.
- Ask loads about you but dodge questions about themselves.
- Refuse to answer basic questions about their job or location.
- Fake profile pics stolen from elsewhere online.
Typical scam stories include:
- Claims to be overseas military needing cash for flights or early discharge.
- Urgent medical bills for themselves or family members.
- Promises to visit if you pay their travel costs upfront.
Keep your guard up and don’t let love cost you a fortune!
